Baton Rouge, LA: Men's Basketball
After the thrilling double overtime victory last week against Bishop State the Bears were trying to keep that momentum going and continue to fine tune their game before conference play starts. Baton Rouge would face the John Melvin University Millers, this aftrenoon in the Bears Den. Baton Rouge would use a strong start to propel them to the 93 to 65 victory over the Millers, in the Bears Den.
In the first half, the Bears opened the game on a 12-0 run fueled by multiple dunks by Laron Louis Jr and Jarrell Love. The Millers would fight back and go on a 7-2 run to pull within seven 14-7 with 14:25 remaining. In the first half, the Bears would use their defensive pressure to force the Millers into multiple turnovers which led to transition buckets for the Bears. The Bears would use and inside out attack to grow their lead to 19 points with 1 minutes left in the half. The Bears would take a 54 to 33 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Millers would not go away as they continued to fight and pressure the Bears. The Bears unloaded their bench, in the second half, as twelve Bears would come off the bench to contribute. The Bears outscored the Millers 39 to 32, in the second half, enroute to the 93 to 65 victory.
Laron Louis Jr. led all Bears with 17 points. The Bears had 4 student athletes score in double figures. The Millers were led in scoring by Ashton Trufant with 20 points.
With the victory the Bears improve to 9-10 while the Millers fall to 1-12 on the season. The Bears lead the overall series record with 2 wins over the Millers.
Bears Highlights:
Laron Louis Jr. led all Bears with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.
Jarrell Love added 16 points with 5 rebounds.
Rayniel Wright scored 13 points with 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
The Bears will be back in action this Wednesday January 31, 2024, as they travel to New Orleans to face the Delgado Dolphins to start LCCAC play. The game will be at 7:30 pm in the Williamson Center on the campus of Delgado.
