Bears fall to Sun Chiefs to start the New Year

Bears fall to Sun Chiefs to start the New Year

Saturday January 4, 2020

Baton Rouge, LA

Unlike the Lady Bears, the changing of the calendar year was not kind to the Baton Rouge Bears.  Coastal Alabama South Sun Chiefs earned the 86 to 72 victory, this afternoon in the Bonne Santé Wellness Center.

Both teams struggled to score in the first five minutes of the game.  They both were still a bit rusty from the long holiday layover.  The Bears grabbed an early 9 to 8 advantage with 15:20 left to play, in the first half. This would be the only lead the Bears would have all afternoon.  Over the next five minutes the Sun Chiefs would go on a 16 to 4 run to take a 24 to 13 lead, with 10 minutes to play.  The Sun Chiefs found their stroke from the perimeter connecting on seven three pointers. The Bears would close the gap to six points with a 15 to 10 run fueled by the hot shooting hand of Ronald Pugh II and Spencer Mays.  Unfortunately, the Bears could not withstand that momentum as the Sun Chiefs would close out the half on a 12 to 4 run to take a 46 to 32 halftime lead over the Bears.

Early in the second half, the Sun Chiefs would grow their lead to 14 points, their largest lead of the game.  The Bears continued to fight and would get as close as eight points, but the Sun Chiefs were just too much for the Bears to handle, as they would go on to defeat the Bears 86 to 72.

The Bears were led in scoring by Freshman Guard Spencer Mays who scored a game high 22 points. Coastal Alabama South was led in scoring by C. Finch who scored 20.

With the victory the Sun Chiefs improve to 9-3, while the Bears fall to 3-12 on the season.

Bears Highlights:

Spencer Mays led all Bears with 22 points

Ronald Pugh II scored 14 points

Devin Carlin added 12 points

The Bears will be back in action this Monday January 6 as they take on Coahoma Community College Tigers at 7:30 pm in the Bonne Santé Wellness Center.
