Bears hold off late Bengals rally for conference victory

Bears hold off late Bengals rally for conference victory

Saturday February 9, 2019: Men's Basketball

Eunice, LA

The Baton Rouge Bears jumped out to an early advantage but had to hold off a late rally by the LSUE Bengals to preserve the 76 to 72 LCCAC conference victory.

In the first seven minutes of the first half, it was raining three's for the Bears.  BRCC jumped out to an early 17 to 2 lead over the Bengals. BRCC hit 4 three pointers, in that time span. Baton Rouge continued to score from the perimeter and their defensive pressure kept the Bengals out of sync on offense.  At the half the Bears led 37 to 25. The second half started much like the first half did.  The Bears continued their hot shooting from the perimeter and grew their lead to 19 points, with 12 minutes to play at 54 to 35. The Bengals would not quit as they would pull within five with 20 seconds to play but the Bears were able to knock down some free throws and get some transitions buckets to seal the 76 to 72 conference victory. This is the Bears second conference victory in a row, as they defeated the Southern Shreveport Jags on Wednesday night by the score of 83 to 77 in Shreveport.

With the win, Baton Rouge improves to 4-14 and 2-2 in conference play.  LSUE falls to 12-12 and 2-2 in conference play.

Brenden Vessel led the Bears with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assist and 3 steals. He was 4 for 5 from three point range
