Mississippi Gulf Coast Defeats Bears in Home Opener

Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs took advantage of the Bears sluggish start to build a lead that they would not relinquish.  Bulldogs defeat the Bears 94 to 62. Gulf Coast came out on fire, scoring the first 12 points of the game.  They took advantage of a size mismatch to dominate the boards and a Bears offense that was out of sync, in the first 10 minute of the game. The Bears scored their first points, of the game, on a three pointer by Caleb Hebert with 16:21 to go. Over the next seven minutes, the Bulldogs went on a 12 to 8 run to push their lead to 24 to 11. Gulf Coast kept their foot on the gas and closed the first half with 48 points, to take a 48 to 29 lead into halftime.  At the half, Brenden Vessel led the Bears with 10 points. Mississippi Gulf Coast was led by Keevon Oney with 15 points, at the half.

The second half was much like the first half.  Mississippi Gulf Coast dominated the boards and took advantage of the Bears miscues. The Bears shot 59 % from the free throw line compared to 76 % by the Bulldogs.BRCC shot 35% from the field.  Keevon Oney lead Gulf Coast with 24 points, followed by, 14 from Mykah Brown.

Bears Highlights:

Brenden Vessel led the Bears in scoring with 11 points and 5 assists.

Terry Johnson finished with 8 points, all in the second half.

Javon Brazile came off the bench to score five points and grab 3 rebounds.

Nigel Jones led the team with 5 rebounds.

 

The Bears will be back in action this Friday November 9, as they will play Itawamba Community College starting at 7:30 pm.  The Lady Bears will kick the day off at 5:30 pm versus the  Itawamba Lady Indians.
