Bears Comeback Falls Short

Bears Comeback Falls Short

Wednesday February 7, 2018: Men's Basketball

Baton Rouge, LA

Baton Rouge forged a comeback, in the second half, of tonight's conference game versus Southern-Shreveport but came up short of a victory.  Southern Shreveport Jaguars beat Baton Rouge Bears 73 to 69. The first half was very sloppy for the Bears.  Their offense was in a slump and the Jaguars took advantage of missed defensive coverages to jump out to an early 18 to 10 lead, over the Bears, with 14:26 left in the first half. The Bears went on a mini run of their own to close the gap to 10 points with 8:06 left in the half.  The Jaguars used a 15 to 10 run to extended their lead to 43 to 30 heading into halftime.

At the half, Coach Wilson made a key defensive adjustment and challenged his kids to play aggressive defense and protect the ball. His young ball club did just that in the second half.  The Bears were more aggressive on defense, not letting the Jags get easy looks at the basket. That aggressive defensive play led to some easy buckets on the offensive end.  The Bears opened the first eight minutes of the second half on an 13 to 5 run, to close the Jags lead to 48 to 43 over the Bears. Baton Rouge would get Southern-Shreveport's lead down to only one point with seven minutes to go in the game. But unforced turnovers and sloppy ball handling by the Bears would let Southern-Shreveport grab a lead that they would not relinquish.  The final score was Southern Shreveport 73 and Baton Rouge 69.

Both teams were fairly hot from the field, BRCC shot 64 % from the field, 33% from three point line, while Southern-Shreveport shot 62 % from the field and 50 % from the three point line.

Southern Shreveport Jaguars improve to a record of 5-10 , 1-1 in conference and Baton Rouge falls to 9-10 and 1-1 in conference.  Tonight concludes the first round of games in the conference.  Everyone is tied with a 1 win and 1 loss conference record.
