Bears close out the conference weekend with a win over the  Dolphins

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Delgado Dolphins met on the Diamond this afternoon at Pete Goldsby Field to conclude their three game conference series. Baton Rouge would rebound from a tough conference day yesterday to put all the pieces of the game together to defeat the Dolphins 10 to 6.

Baton Rouge would come out the gates on fire at the plate today. That timely hit or hits the Bears have been looking for all season appeared in the first inning. The Bears would plate five runs, in the bottom of the first inning, to take the early 5-0 lead over the Dolphins.Tanner Hornback would lead off the inning and reach on a walk and he would score on an Braden Corkern single to left field. Isaac Leger would single and Jackson Martin would draw a walk to load the bases with Bears. Ryan Richard would hit a double to left center to drive in Corkern and Leger. Matthew Reinholtz would hit a sacrifice bunt which would score Martin and a hustling Richard who would score under the tag for the Bears fifth run of the frame.

The Bears would manufacture another run, in the bottom of the second, to increase their lead to 6-0 over the Dolphins. Max Veillon would lead off with a single to centerfield, he would then steal second and third and score on a pass ball.

The Dolphins would get on the board with three runs, in the top of the fourth inning, but they still trailed the Bears 6-3.

The Bears would plate two more runs, in the bottom of the sixth inning, to increase their lead over the Dolphins to 8-3. Jackson Martin would lead off with a single up the middle and score when the Dolphins could not handle the Lane Patin bunt. Patin would score on a Max Veillon triple to centerfield.

The Dolphins would pick up a run, in the top of the seventh inning, when they would load the bases but Bears pitcher Braden McLin would come in to limit the damage.

Another inning, another two runs for the Bears. Seth Fontenot would lead off the inning by being hit by a pitch and he would score on a single by Isaac Leger. Leger would advance to second when the Dolphins tried to throw Fontenot out at the plate. Jackson Martin would trade places with Leger with a double to right field. After seven innings, the Bears held a 10-4 lead over the Dolphins.

Delgado would scratch across a run, in the top of the eighth inning, but the Bears still held a 10-5 lead.

The Dolphins would threaten in the top of the ninth when they would load the bases with two outs but the Bears would hold them to only one run to secure the 10-6 victory.

John Touchet started on the mound for the Bears and earned the victory. Touchet pitched 4 innings allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits while walking 4 and striking out 2. Cade Robin (2 innings), Braden McLin ( 3.0 innings)pitched in relief for the Bears and earned the save. C. Achee started on the mound for the  and was credited with the loss.

Baton Rouge outhit Delgado 10 to 7. The Bears committed two errors compared to one for the Dolphins.

 

Bears Game Highlights

Braden Corkern went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Seth Fontenot had 1 run.

Collin Dupre went 1 for 4.

Isaac Leger went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

Jackson Martin went 2 for 3 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

Matthew Reinholtz had 2 RBIs.

Ryan Richard went 2 for 4 with 1 run and 2 RBIs.

Lane Patin had 1 run.

Max Veillon went 2 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

 

With the victory the Bears improved to 13-36, 2-7 while the Dolphins fell to 33-11, 10-2 on the season.

This was the last home game for the following Bears Baseball Sophomores: Collin Dupre, Shea Pitre, Matthew Reinholtz, Max Veillon, John Touchet,Braden McLin, Brady Neyland, Ryan Richard, Ethan Quebodeaux,Barrett Hebert, Braden Corkern, Ian Johnson, Justin Coats, Caden Durand, and Isaac Leger. We would like to thank these young men for their hard work and dedication to the Bears program over the past two years.

The Bears will travel to Chalmette, Louisiana to conclude the regular season with a three game series versus Nunez on  April 26 and April 27, 2024.
