Bears fall in Home Conference Opener to the Nunez Pelicans

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Nunez Community College Pelicans met this evening under the lights at Pete Goldsby Field to start their three game conference series. The Bears struggled to contain the Pelicans in one big inning and their comeback fell short as they would be defeated 5-4 by the Nunez Pelicans, in the opening game of the weekend conference series.

The Bears bats would come out of the gates hot, this evening, as they would plate 3 runs on 4 hits to take the early 3-0 lead. Tanner Hornback would lead off, the bottom of the first inning, with a triple to left field and he would score when Collin Dupre would reach on a fielders choice. Jackson Martin would be next and he would hit a double to left field moving Dupre to third base. Matthew Reinholtz would lay down a bunt down the third baseline and he would beat out the throw at first. Dupre would score on the play for the Bears second run of the frame. Seth Fonentot would reach by being hit by a pitch which would load the bases full of Bears. Lane Patin would lay down a bunt and reach without a throw. Martin would score on the Patin's bunt single.

The Pelicans would get on the board, in the top of the fourth inning, with five runs on one hit with three Bears errors to take the 5-3 lead over the Bears. 

The Bears would push across a run, in the bottom of the sixth, but they still trailed the Pelicans 5-4. Max Veillon would single to centerfield and score on a Tanner Hornback double to left field. 

Bears Relief Pitcher Cade Robin would shut down the Pelicans over the final five innings. Robin sat down the first eight batters he faced and only allowed one hit by the Pelicans over his five inning outing.

The Bears would threaten, in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Braden MacLin would lead off with a single and would be moved over by a sacrifice bunt by Collin Dupre. Jackson Martin would single to centerfield moving McLin to third but a strikeout and a line out would end the Bears threat and the game with the Pelicans taking the 5-4 victory.

Caden Durand started on the mound for mound for the Bears and took the loss. Durand pitched 4 innings allowing 5 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits while walking 3 and striking out 1. Caden Robin pitched 5 innings in relief for the Bears. Robin allowed 0 runs on 1 hit while striking out 2. E. Woodard would started on the mound for the Pelicans and was credited with the victory. He pitched 6 innings allowing  4 runs on 19 hits while striking out 3.

Th Bears outhit Nunez 12 to 3. The Bears committed four errors compared to two by the Pelicans in the ballgame.

Bears Game Highlights

Tanner Hornback went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI.

Braden McLin went 2 for 5.

Collin Dupre went 1 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Jackson Martin went 3 for 5 with 1 run.

Matthew Reinholtz went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI.

Lane Patin went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.

Max Veillon went 1 for 4 with 1 run.

 

With the loss the Bears fell to 8-32 while the Pelicans improved to 14-15 on the season.

The Bears will conclude their three game conference series with the Nunez Community College Pelicans tomorrow Saturday April 6 in a doubleheader starting at 2 pm at Pete Goldsby Field.
