Bears swept by Dolphins in opening round of conference play

The Delgado Dolphins and the Baton Rouge met on the diamond at Kirsch Rooney Stadium, this afternoon in conference play. The Dolphins would sweep the Bears 9-3 and 2-1.

Game One

The Baton Rouge Bears came out the gates swinging but they could not contain the five run fifth inning as the Delgado Dolphins would defeat the Bears 9 to 3.

The Bears would get on the board first with two runs, in the top of the second inning. Braden McLin would reach on an error. Collin Dupre would follow with a single to left field. Seth Fontenot would bunt into a fielders choice moving Dupre to second. Matthew Reinholtz would lay down a bunt and reach on an error. On that play Dupre and Fontenot would come around to score for the Bears.

The Dolphins would respond with three runs, in the bottom of the second inning, when  R. Centanni would lead off with a triple and score on a E Booth ground out. Then J. Emes would hit a two run homer to left field to give the Dolphins the 3-2 lead over the Bears.

The Bears would tie the game at three with a run in the top of the third. Tanner Hornback would lead off with a single up the middle. The Dolphins tried to pick Hornback off first but an errand throw would advance Hornback to third. Jackson Martin would ground out to the first basemen but Hornback would score on the play to tie the game at three.

The Dolphins would plate a run,in the bottom of the third, to retake the 4-3 lead over the Bears.

The Dolphins would plate five runs, in the bottom of the fifth inning, to increase their lead over the Bears to 9-3. 

The Bears would have their chances late in the game but they could not find that timely hit to push across some runs thus the Delgado Dolphins would win game one 9-3.

Caden Durand started on the mound for the Bears and was credited with the loss. Durand pitched 4.2 innngs allowing 8 runs on 9 hits while striking out 1 and walking 2. Cole Veronie  (0.0 innings), Ethan Quebodeaux (1.1 innings) pitched in relief for the Bears. L. Barbier. started on the mound for the Dolphins and earned the victory. He pitched 5.1 innings allowing 3 runs on 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 5.

Delgado outhit Baton Route 11 to 7. The Bears committed one error compared to three for the Dolphins in the ballgame.

Bears Game One Highlights

Tanner Hornback went 2 for 4 with 1 run

Jackson Martin went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI.

Ryan Richard went 1 for 4

Braden McLin went 1 for 2 with 1 BB.

Collin Dupre went 1 for 3 with 1 run.

Seth Fontenot had 1 run.


Game Two

Runs were at a premium, in game two, this afternoon at Kirsch Rooney Stadium. It was a classic pitching duel between Bears pitcher Reid Godchaux and  Dolphins pitcher M. Howard. Both pitchers combined to allow 3 runs while striking out 13. ( Godchaux 7 and Howard 6). The Dolphins had just enough run support to walk off with the 2-1 victory.

Delgado would get on the board first with a run, in the bottom of the first, to take the early 1-0 lead over Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge would get their first hit and run of the game ,in the top of fifth inning, when Collins Dupre would single to centerfield and he would score on a Matthew Reinholtz triple to left field. In the middle of the fifth inning, the game was tied at 1 run a piece.

In the bottom of the seventh the Dolphins open the inning with a walk, a hit by batter and another walk to load the bases. C. Artigues would single up the middle driving in the winning run. The Dolphins walked off with the 2-1 game two victory over the Bears.

Reid Godchaux started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss.  Reid pitched 6 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while walking 4 and striking out 7.  Jack Cowan pitched (0.0 innings) in relief for the Bears. M. Hoard started on the mound for the Dolphins and earned the victory. Hoard pitched 7 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 6.

Both teams tallied four hits and both teams committed one error in the ballgame.

Bears Game Two Highlights:

Tanner Hornback went 1 for 3

Collin Dupre went 1 for 3 with 1 run.

Matthew Reinholtz went 1 for 3 with 1 triple and 1 RBI.

Braden Corkern went 1 for 2.

With the sweep the Dolphins improved to 26-6 while the Bears fell to 7-30 on the season.

Next Up

The Bears will close out their series with the Delgado Dolphins on Saturday March 30, 2024 at 2 pm at Kirsch Rooney Stadium. The Bears will host the LSU Alexandria Generals on Monday April 1, 2024 at 4 pm at Pete Goldsby Field.
