Bears fall at home to the Jones College Bobcats

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Jones College Bobcats faced off today in the back end of a home and home series at Pete Goldsby Field. These two teams last met on Friday February 23 in Ellisville, where the Bobcats would rally late to sweep the Bears. Baton Rouge could not overcome the early deficit they would face, this afternoon,  in both games of the doubleheader with Jones College. The Bobcats would sweep the Bears 15 to 5, in seven inning run rule, and 10 to 3, in the nightcap.

 

Game One

Baton Rouge could not keep up with the quick start of the Jones College Bobcats, in game one of today's doubleheader. The Bobcats defeat the Bears 15 to 5, in a seven inning run rule.

Jones would get on the board first with six runs, in the second inning. Austin Mills would add to Jones tally via a three run homer to right center field. The Bobcats took advantage of some shaky defense by the Bears and some timely hitting to take the early lead.  The Bobcats would score six runs off five hits and the Bears would commit two errors in the frame. 

The Bears would respond and start scratching away at the Bobcats lead with a run in the second inning. Jackson Martin would lead off the inning with a double to centerfield. Barrett Hebert would be hit by a pitch and Dillion Bird would walk to load the bases. Seth Fontenot would reach on an error scoring Martin.

Reid Godchaux would sit the Bobcats down in order, in the top of the third inning. The Bears would continue to scratch away at the Bobcats leads. Collin Dupre would hit a triple to centerfield and score on a Tanner Hornback groundout for the Bears second run of the game. After three innings, the Bears trailed the Bobcats 6 to 2.

The Bobcats would continue to stay hot at the plate and score three more runs, in the fourth inning, to increase their lead to 9 to 2 over the Bears. The Bobcats would load the bases, in the fifth inning, and score a run when Bears pitcher Ian Johnson would balk to increase their lead to 10 to 2 over the Bears.

The Bears would cut the lead in half with three runs, in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Tanner Hornback would hustle down the line to reach on an infield single then steals second. He would score when the Bears would do a hit and run with Jackson Martin who would hit a bloop single to left field. Martin would score on a Ryan Richard double to centerfield. Aidan  Machado would pinch hit and reach on an error scoring Richard from third for the Bears third run of the inning.

Jones would score five runs, in the seventh inning, to increase their lead to 15 to 5 over the Bears. Four of those runs came off the bat of  E Rogers who would hit a grand slam to left field. The Bears would load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Conner Kleinpeter would lead off and reach on an error, Max Veillon would double to centerfield and Matthew Reinholtz would walk. Issac Leger would seem to hit a ball down the third base line but the home plate umpire would call it foul. Leger would battle with an 11 pitch at bat before he would strike out. Ryan Richard would hit a pop fly to right field which the right fielder would catch and throw Kleinpeter out at the plate to seal the 15 to 5 run rule victory for the Bobcats.

Reid Godchaux started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss.  Reid pitched 4 innings allowing 9 runs (5 earned ) on 9 hits while walking one and striking out one. Ian Johnson ( 2.1 innings )  and Hunter Lail (0.2 inning) pitched in relief for the Bears. C. Manuel started on the mound for the Bobcats and earned the victory. He pitched 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 2 hits with 1 walk and four strikeouts.

Jones College outhit Baton Rouge 14 to 6. Jones College committed 4 errors compared to 3 for Baton Rouge.

Bears Game One Highlights:

Collin Dupre went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 triple.

Max Veillon went 1 for 1

Tanner Hornback went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Jackson Martin went 2 for 3 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

Ryan Richard went 1 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Aidan Machado had 1 RBI.

 

Game Two

For the second straight game Jones would get on the board first. The Bobcats would score seven runs, in the top of the first inning, to take an early advantage over the Bears. 

The Bears would get one run back when Isaac Leger would lead off the second inning with a solo homer to centerfield. This was Leger first collegiate homerun. After the second innings, the Bears trailed the Bobcats 7-1.

The Bobcats would quickly respond, in the third inning, when H Carley would lead off with a solo homer to left field.

Jones would tact on two more runs, in the top of the sixth, to extend their lead over the Bears to 10-1.

Baton Rouge would continue to fight as they would score two runs, in the bottom of the sixth inning, but they still trailed the Bobcats 10-3. Ryan Richard would reach on a dropped third strike. Jake Brouillette would pinch run for Richard. Max Veillon would hit a line drive to centerfield then Isaac Leger would walk to load the bases with Bears. Aidan Machado would walk to score Brouillette. Shea Pitre would hit a sac fly scoring Veillon.

Baton Rouge could not overcome the early deficient as they would fall 10 to 3 in game two to the Jones College Bobcats.

Owen Ponthieux started on the mound for the Bears and was credited with the loss. Braden McLin (2 innings), Tanner Cranford ( 2 innings ) and John Touchet (1 inning) pitched in relief for the Bears. 

 

Bears Game Two Highlights

Tanner Hornback went 2 for 3

Max Veillon went 1 for 4 with 1 run.

Isaac Leger went 1 for 2 with 1 run, 1 RBI, 1 BB and 1 homer 

Aidan Machado had 1 RBI

Shea Pitre went 2 for 3

 

With the pair of losses, the Bears fell to 1-20, while Jones College Bobcats improved to 16-2 on the season.

 

The Bears will return to action on Friday March 1 as they face the Copiah Lincoln Wolves in a doubleheader starting at at 3 pm at Pete Goldsby Field.
