Bears could not contain the High Powered offense of Mississippi Gulf Coast

The Baton Rouge Bears could not contain the high-powered offense of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs, this afternoon, at Pete Goldsby Field.  The Bulldogs would defeat the Bears 12 to 4.

The Bulldogs would get on the board first when they would load the bases via a single, walk, and a hit by batter. The Bears would hit another batter driving in the Bulldogs first run of the ball game. The Bulldogs would increase their lead, in the second, when they would score five runs in the frame.  After two inning the Bulldogs led the Bears 6-0.

The Bears would get on the board with a run in the third inning. Ryan Richard would walk and move to second when Tanner Hornback was hit by a pitch. Richard and Hornback would pull off the double steal. Jackson Martin would ground out to first, but Ryan Richard would score from third for the Bears first run of the game. After three innings the Bulldogs led the Bears 6-1.

The Bulldogs would tact on two more runs, in the fourth inning, to increase their lead to 8-1 over the Bears.

The Bears would scratch across a run in the fifth inning. Max Veillon would lead off and reach base when he was hit by a pitch.  Veillon would then reach third on a wild pitch and he would score when Tanner Hornback would reach on a fielding error by the Bulldogs shortstop. After five innings, the Bears still trailed 8-2.

The Bulldogs would add to their lead, in the sixth inning, with 3 more runs; 11-2.

The Bears would continue to fight as they would again scratch across a run in the seventh inning. Conner Kleinpeter would lead off the inning with a single to left field then he would steal second and be driven in by a Tanner Hornback single to left field. After seven innings, the Bears still trailed 11-3.

The Bulldogs would scratch across a run, in the eighth inning, to increase their lead to 12-3. The Bears would respond with a leadoff homerun to left field by Braden McLin. After eight innings, the Bulldogs led 12-4.

Ethan Quebodeaux would shut down the Bulldogs in order in the ninth inning with two strikeouts and a lineout. The Bears could not get anything going in the ninth inning thus falling to the Bulldogs 12-4.

Owen Ponthieux started on the mound for the Bears and earned the loss.  He pitched two innings allowing 6 runs, 2 earned on 5 hits while striking out 3 and walking 3. Tanner Cranford (2 innings), Collin McDonald (2 innings), Brady Neyland (2 innings) and Ethan Quebodeaux all pitched in relief for the Bears. Aiden Seymour started on the mound for the Bulldogs. He pitched 4 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 9. The Bulldogs staff had 15 strike outs on the day.

 

The Bulldogs out hit the Bears 11 to 6. Baton Rouge committed 4 errors compared to 3 for the Bulldogs.

Bears Highlights:

Tanner Hornback went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI.

Jackson Martin went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.

Braden McLin went 1 for 5 with 1 homerun.

Aidan Machado went 1 for 1.

 

With the loss the Bears fell to 0-2, while the Bulldogs improved to 2-0 on the season.

 

The Bears will travel to Lake Charles on Tuesday January 30, 2024, to take on the Wharton County JC Pioneers at McNeese University.
