Bears Baseball defeat the Nunez Pelicans in regular season finale

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Nunez Pelicans will conclude the 2022 regular season this afternoon at Noel Suarez Stadium in Chalmette. Baton Rouge would conclude the weekend series with a 12-8 victory to secure the series sweep.

The Nunez Pelicans would get on the board first with a run, in the first inning, to take the early lead;1-0. The Pelicans would add two runs their lead, in the third inning, via a two-run homer by L. LeBlanc and a solo homer by L. Manson. The Bears would pull within a run with three runs, in the fourth inning. Jonas LeBourgeois would hit a 2-run homer to centerfield and Mason Long would hit an infield single with the bases loaded driving in another run.  After four innings, the Pelicans led 4-3. The Bears would keep things going, in the fifth inning, as they would plate five runs. The Bears would take advantage of some inconsistent Pelican's pitching for two runs and Braxton Gallet would hit a three run homer to centerfield to cap off the five-run inning for the Bears. The Pelicans would respond with three runs, in the bottom of the fifth, to pull within one run; 8-7. The Pelicans would tie the game at eight with a run, in the sixth inning. The Bears would take the lead when William Dunn would single, advance to second on a Braden Keen sac bunt, advance to third on a pass ball and scored on a Pelican's pitcher throwing error, in the seventh inning.  After seven innings, the Bears led 9-8. The Bears would add a few insurance runs, in the eighth inning. Gage Breithaupt would hit a solo homer to centerfield. Jonas LeBourgeois would double to right field, he would be moved over to third on a William Dunn single and he would score on a Braden Keen single to right field. Jacob Dunn would follow with a single to right field driving in William Dunn. After eight innings, the Bears led 12-8. Slade Zeppuhar would pitch the final two innings, for the Bears. Slade would hold the Pelicans scoreless over those innings thus preserving the 12-8 Bears victory.

Ethan Prescott started on the mound for the Bears. Prescott pitched four innings allowing 6 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4. Sean Burkhead (1.0 innings)  Luke Evans (2.0 innings) Slade Zeppuhar (2.0 innings) pitched in relief for the Bears. Luke Evans earned the victory for the Bears. Payton Cooper started on the mound for the Pelicans. He pitched five innings allowing 8 runs on 9 hits while striking out 5.

Bears Game Highlights 

Braxton Gallet went 2 for 3 with 1 run, 3 RBIs and 1 HR

Gage Breithaupt went 1 for 2 with 1 run, 1 RBI and 1 HR

Jonas LeBourgeois went 2 for 5 with 3 runs, 2 RBIs, 1 double, 1BB and 1 HR

William Dunn went 4 for 4 with 1 double

Jacob Dunn went 2 for 3 with 1 run, 1 BB and 2 RBIs 

Mason Long went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI

Braden Keen went 1 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI 

Nick Carriere went 1 for 5

 

With the victory, the Bears improve to 27-29, 6-6 while the Pelicans fall to 24-20,2-10 on the season.

 

The Bears will start the NJCAA Region XXIII Division Baseball Tournament this Friday May 6, 2022, at 12 with a match up with the Nunez Pelicans. The tournament will be played at Pete Goldsby Field on May 6-8.
