Bears win series finale over the Dolphins

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Delgado Dolphins concluded their three game conference series, this afternoon, at Pete Goldsby Field. The Baton Rouge Bears would hold off a late rally by the Delgado Dolphins to secure the 9-8 series finale victory.

The Bears opened the scoring with a run, in the first inning. Braxton Gallet would lead off with a triple off the centerfield wall and he would score on an Ethan Menard sac fly. The Dolphins would tie the game at one with a run, in the top of the second inning. The Bears would retake the lead in the bottom of the second with a run;2-1. Nick Carriere would single, advance to second on a bunt single by Alex Guilbeau and score on a throwing error by the Dolphins when he and Guilbeau attempted a double steal. The Bears bats would finally come alive, in the third inning, when they would plate five runs to take a 7-1 lead over the Dolphins. Ethan Menard, Lane Hutchinson and Gage Breithaupt would hit back to back to back singles to load the bases. Nick Carriere would lay down a bunt that the Dolphins could not manage scoring Menard. Alex Guilbeau would then hit a double down the left field line driving in three runs. Alex Guilbeau would steal third and score on an infield ground out by Jacob Dunn. The Dolphins would inch closer, in the fourth inning, when they would score three runs: 7-4. The Bears would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Braxton Gallet and Elliot Hebert would hit back-to-back singles. They would both advance on a Lane Hutchinson ground out to the first basemen. Gallet would score on a balk by the Dolphin's pitcher and Hebert would score when Gage Breithaupt would reach on a dropped third strike. After four innings, the Bears led 9 to 4. The Dolphins would scratch two runs across, in the seventh, but they still trailed the Bears 9-6. The Dolphins again would inch closer with a run, in the eighth inning, via a Lege solo homer to left field;9-7. The Dolphins would not go down easily as they would score another run, in the ninth inning, but the Bears would strand the Dolphins tying run at third to seal the 9-8 victory.

Teddy Webb started on the mound for the Bears and earned the victory. Teddy pitched five innings allowing 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out 3. Caden Akana pitched in relief for the Bears. Caden pitched four innings allowing 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out 4 to earn the save for the Bears. H. Draper started for the Dolphins and took the loss. He pitched three innings allowing 7 runs on 8 hits while striking out 2. Josh McCord pitched in relief for the Dolphins.

Delgado outhit Baton Rouge 15 to 12. Both teams committed two errors in the ball game.

Bears Highlights:

Braxton Gallet went 3 for 5 with 2 runs

Nick Carriere went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI 

Alex Guilbeau went 1 for 4 with 1 run and 3 RBIs 

Jacob Dunn went 1 for 3 with 1 BB and 1 RBI 

Elliot Hebert went 1 for 5 with 1 run

Ethan Menard went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI 

Lane Hutchinson went 1 for 4 with 1 run

Gage Breithaupt went 1 for 3 with 1 run

William Dunn went 1 for 3

 

With the victory the Bears improve to 24-29, 3-6, while the Dolphins fall to 31-12, 10-2 in conference play.

The Bears will be back in action next Saturday April 30 and Sunday May 1 as they finish out the regular season with a conference match up with the Nunez Pelicans in Chalmette. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 2 pm.
