Bears fall in series finale to the Pelicans

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Nunez Pelicans concluded their three game conference weekend series this afternoon at Pete Goldsby Field. Today's game was a single nine inning game. It was a high scoring affair between the Bears and the Pelicans. The Pelicans would use a couple big innings to take an early lead, in which, the Bears could not overcome on their way to a 17-8 victory.

The Bears would get on the board first with a run, in the first inning. Elliot Hebert would hit a double to right field and would advance to third on fly out by Blaise Foote. Ethan Menard would be next and he would be hit by a pitch. The Bears would pull off a double steal scoring Hebert from third for the Bears first run of the game. After one inning, the Bears led 1-0. The Pelicans would respond with a seven runs, in the third inning, to take a 7-1 lead over the Bears. The inning was highlighted by a three-run homer to right field by P. Cooper. The Pelicans would add two runs to their lead via two run homer by L. Leblanc, in the fourth inning.

The Bears would scratch across a run, in the fourth inning, but they still trailed 9-2. Gage Breithaupt would draw a walk and Jacob Dunn would also draw a walk. Breithaupt would advance to third on a pass ball and score on another pass ball by the Pelicans. The Pelicans would add three runs to their lead in the fifth inning; 12-2. The Bears would respond with three runs of their own, in the bottom of the fifth inning, but they still trailed; 12-5. Elliot Hebert would lead off the fifth inning with a walk, Blaise Foote would reach on an error by the right fielder. Ethan Menard would walk to load the bases for the Bears. Hebert would score on a wild pitch. Foote would score when the Pelican's pitcher would balk. Nick Carriere would hit a shot off the left field wall scoring Menard and the Bears third run of the inning. The Bears would inch closer, in the sixth inning, via a two-run homer by Elliot Hebert to left field;12-7. Bears would keep chipping away at the Nunez's  lead, in the seventh inning. Nick Carriere would hit a triple and score on a sac fly by William Dunn. After seven inning, Nunez led 12-8. Nunez would add three runs, in the eighth, to their lead; 15-8. Nunez would continue to build their lead with two runs, in the ninth inning;17-8. The Bears would continue to fight till the end as they would load the bases with back to back singles by Britt Jordan and Jacob Dunn and a walk by Drew Blanchard but all were stranded. The Nunez Pelicans win the series finale 17-8 over the Baton Rouge Bears.

Ethan Prescott started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss. Ethan pitched two and two-thirds innings allowing 5 runs on 4 hits while striking out 2. Slade Zeppuhar (0.2 inning), Case Roark (0.2 inning ), Sean Burkhead (0.2 inning), John Shahrdar (3.0 innings), Caden Akana (1.0 inning) and Alex Norris (0.1 inning) all pitched in relief for the Bears. Jaden Brasseaux started on the mound for the Pelicans. He pitched four innings allowing 5 runs on 2 hits while striking out 3.

Braxton Gallet went 1 for 5 with 1 run

Elliot Hebert went 2 for 5 with 3 runs, 2 RBIs, 1 double and 1 HR

Nick Carriere went 2 for 3 with 1 run, 1 RBI, 1 double and 1 triple

Britt Jordan went 1 for 1

Jacob Dunn went 1 for 4 with 1 BB

William Dunn went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI and 1 BB

With the victory Nunez improves to 22-14, 1-5 in conference play, while Baton Rouge falls to 21-25, 2-4 in conference play.

The Bears will return to action this Thursday April 14, 2022, when they will start a home and home series with the LSUE Bengals. Thursday's game will be at 6 pm in Eunice. The Bears and the Bengals will shift the series back to the Capital City on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 3 pm at Pete Goldsby Field. The series will conclude with a 3 pm game on the Cajun Prairie in Eunice, La, on Saturday April 16, 2022.
