Bears drop conference opening games to the Delgado Dolphins

The Baton Rouge Bears traveled to New Orleans today to start conference play versus the Delgado Dolphins at Kirsch- Rooney Stadium, on the City Park campus of Delgado Community College. Delgado sweeps the doubleheader against Baton Rouge. Delgado would use two big innings, in each game, to earn the victories. The Dolphins won game one 7-2 and they won game two 4-1. Both games were seven inning contest.

Game One

Delgado uses a big third inning to defeat Baton Rouge 7 to 2.

The Bears would get on the board a first with a run in the first inning. Tristan Frederick would lead off the game and hit the first pitch he would see to left field. Braxton Gallet would follow with a walk. Frederick would steal third and score on a Dolphin's throwing error by the catcher for the Bears first run of the game. Delgado would respond and score a run, in the bottom of the frame, to tie the game at one after one inning. The Dolphins would take advantage of some inconsistent pitching by the Bears, and capitalize on some timely hitting to score six runs, in the third inning. After three innings, the Dolphins led 7-1. The Bears would scratch across a run, in the sixth inning, but still trailed the Dolphins 7-2. Braxton Gallet would lead off with a single, Gage Breithaupt would be hit by a pitch, Braxton and Gage would move up on a pass ball. Gallet would score on an infield ground out by Nick Carriere for the Bears second run of the game. That would be all the offense the Bears would get in game one thus Delgado would defeat Baton Rouge 7-2.

Corey Cook earned the victory for Delgado. He pitched six innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 6.Ethan Prescott started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss. Ethan pitched two and one third innings allowing 5 runs on 2 hits while striking out 1. Slade Zeppuhar pitched in relief for the Bears. Slade pitched three and two-thirds innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 4.

Delgado outhit Baton Rouge 5 to 3. The Bears committed three errors in the ball game compared to one for the Dolphins.

Bears Game One Highlights:

Tristan Frederick went 1 for 3 with 1 run

Braxton Gallet went 1 for 2 with 1 BB and 1 run

Ethan Menard went 1 for 3

Nick Carriere had 1 RBI

Jacob Dunn had 2BB

 

Game Two

Delgado Dolphins would again use a big inning to take an early lead, in which, the Baton Rouge Bears could not overcome. The Dolphins win game two 4-1.

The Delgado Dolphins would get on the board first with four runs, in the first inning, to take the early 4-0 lead over the Baton Rouge Bears. The Bears would get their first hit of the game, in the fourth inning, when Braxton Gallet would hit an infield single to the shortstop. The Bears would scratch across a run, in the fifth inning, when Braden Keen would lead off with a single to left field and score on a Grant Landry single up the middle. Gavin Green pitched a great game for the Bears but the Bears could not find that timely hit as the Delgado Dolphins would win game two; 4-1.

Carson Lore earned the victory for the Dolphins. He pitched a complete game allowing 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 5. Gavin Green started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss. Gavin pitched six innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits while striking out 5.

Delgado outhit Baton Rouge 5 to 4. Baton Rouge committed two errors in the ball game.

 

Game Two Bears Highlights:

Braxton Gallet went 1 for 3

Braden Keen went 1 for 3 with 1 run

Jacob Dunn went 1 for 1 with 1 BB

Grant Landry went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI

 

With the pair of victories, the Delgado Dolphins improve to 24-9 while the Baton Rouge Bears fall to 19-23 on the season.

These two teams will meet again tomorrow Sunday April 3,  in New Orleans, to conclude the three-game series. First pitch is set for 3 pm at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
