Bears win series over Bengals

The Baton Rouge Bears and the LSUE Bengals concluded their weekend series, this afternoon, in the Capital City. Today's rubber match of the series was a true slugfest between the Bears and the Bengals. The comeback Bears would rally, in the eighth inning, to tie the game and take a one run lead. Bear's pitcher Caden Akana would shut down the Bengals, in the ninth, to secure the 11-10 victory. The Bears win the weekend series over the Bengals;2-1.

The LSUE Bengals got on the board first with two runs, in the first inning. The Bears would get on the board, in the bottom of the first, via a solo homer by Nick Carriere to left field. After one inning, the Bengals had a 2-1 lead over the Bears. The Bengals would plate four runs, in the second inning, to extend their lead over the Bears to 6-1. The Bears would respond with two runs, in the bottom of the second , when Tristan Frederick would hit a triple off the left field wall driving home two runs. After two innings, the Bengals led 6-3. The Bengals would continue their hot hitting at the plate, as they, would score two more runs, in the third inning, to extend their lead to 8-3. The Bears would again respond, in the bottom of the third, with three runs, but they still trailed 8-6. Ethan Menard would hit a single up the middle to score, Blaise Foote, who reached on a single, stole second and advance to third on a throwing error by the Bengal's catcher. Gage Breithaupt would hit a double to left field. Jacob Dunn would follow and lay down a great bunt just out of the reach of the Bengals catcher to score Menard from third. Jonas LeBourgeois would hit a bloop single to right field scoring Breithaupt and the third run of the frame for the Bears. After three innings, the Bears trailed the Bengals 8-6. The Bears would hold the Bengals scoreless in top of the fourth and tie the game at eight via a two run homer by Blaise Foote to right field.

The back and forth continued as the Bengals would retake the lead with a run in the six inning:9-8. Again, the Bears would respond and tie the game, in the bottom of the sixth. The Bears would load the bases with a Braxton Gallet single, a bunt single by Blaise Foote and a single by Ethan Menard. Gage Breithaupt would hit one through the hole on the right side to score Gallet to tie the game at nine. After six innings, the game was tied at nine a piece. The Bengals would scratch across a run, in the seventh, to retake the lead;10-9. The Bears would scratch across two runs, in the bottom of the eighth, to retake the lead:11-10. Ethan Menard would walk, advance to third on a double by Gage Breithaupt and score on a wild pitch to tie the game. Jacob Dunn would hit a sac fly to right field, scoring Breithaupt to give the Bears a run one lead over the Bengals: 11-10. Caden Akana would shut the door on the Bengals, in the ninth, with two fly balls and a ground out to secure the Bears 11 to 10 victory over the Bengals.

Teddy Webb started on the mound for the Bears. Teddy pitched one and two thirds innings allowing 6 runs on 6 hits while striking out 1 and walking two. Alex Norris, Case Roark, Drew Blanchard, Caden Akana all pitched in relief for the Bears.  Caden Akana earned the victory for the Bears. Caden pitched one and two -thirds innings allowing 0 runs on 0 hits while striking out 3. Moody started on the mound for the Bengals. He pitched three innings allowing 6 runs on 7 hits while striking out 3 and walking 1.

Baton Rouge outhit LSUE 17 to 12. LSUE committed five errors in the ball game compared to four for the Bears.

Tristan Frederick went 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs 

Nick Carriere went 1 for 5 with 1 run, 1 RBI and 1 homerun 

Braxton Gallet went 4 for 5 with 2 runs

Blaise Foote went 2 for 4 with 2 runs, 2 RBIs and 1 homerun 

Ethan Menard went 2 for 4 with 2 runs, 1 RBI and 1 BB

Gage Breithaupt went 2 for 4 with 3 runs, 1 RBI and 1 BB

Jonas LeBourgeois went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI

 

With the victory the Baton Rouge Bears improve to 19-21, while the LSUE Bengals fall to 23-7 on the season.

The Bears will start conference play next weekend April 2-3 when they travel to New Orleans to face the Delgado Dolphins. Saturday games will be at 2 and 5 pm at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
