Bears open series with comeback victory over Bengals

The Baton Rouge Bears and the #1 LSUE Bengals began a three-game home and home series tonight under the lights at Pete Goldsby Field. The never say die Bears would rally back to win game one of the series 5-4.

Baton Rouge would get on the board first with a run in the first inning. Blaise Foote would lead off the inning with an infield single. Nick Carriere would move Foote over with a sac bunt. Foote would then steal third and score on a Gage Breithaupt single to left field for the Bears first run of the ball game. LSUE would take the lead, in the third inning, when they would plate two runs;2-1. The Bengals would add to their lead, in the fourth inning, with two more runs; 4-1. The Bears would pull within one run, in the fifth inning, when they would score two runs. Jonas LeBourgeois would single to centerfield, advance to second on a pass ball,  advance to third on a wild pitch and score on a Nick Carriere single to right field. Carriere would steal second and score on a Braxton Gallet single to left field. After five innings, the Bengals led 4-3 over the Bears. The Bears would take advantage of a Bengals throwing error to tie the game in the seventh inning. William Dunn would walk and advance to third on a throwing error by the Bengals catcher. Dunn would score on a Jacob Dunn infield ground out to tie the game at four. John Shahrdar would hold the Bengals scoreless in his first two innings of work in relief for the Bears. In the eighth inning, the comeback Bears would do it again and take a 5-4 lead. Gage Breithaupt would hit a bloop single to left field. Gage would be replaced by Case Roark on the base paths. Britt Jordan would follow with a single to right field moving Roark to third. Tristan Frederick would hit the first pitch he would see to right field driving home Roark and the eventual game winning run. The Bengals would threaten, in the ninth, with two runners on but John Shahrdar would get two fly outs and a strikeout to end the Bengals threat and secure the 5-4 victory.

John Shahrdar pitched three innings of shutout baseball in relief for the Bears to earn the victory. John pitched three innings allowing 0 runs on 1 hits, while striking out 3 and only walking 1. Ethan Prescott started on the mound for the Bears. Ethan pitched six innings, allowing 4 runs on 3 hits while striking out 7. Luke McGibboney took the loss for the Bengals. He pitched three innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 2 and walking 1. Miles Clack started on the mound for the Bengals. Clack pitched five innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5 and walking 0.

Baton Rouge outhit LSUE 10 to 4. LSUE committed three errors compared to two by Baton Rouge.

Tristan Frederick went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI

Blaise Foote went 1 for 4 with 1 run

Nick Carriere went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI 

Braxton Gallet went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI

Gage Breithaupt went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI

Alex Guilbeau went 1 for 3

Britt Jordan went 1 for 1

Jacob Dunn had 1 RBI 

Jonas LeBourgeois went 1 for 3 with 1 run

 

With the victory the Bears improve to 18-20, while the Bengals fall to 22-6 on the season.

The series shifts to Eunice, Louisiana tomorrow Saturday March 26 with a 6 pm game at Bengals Stadium.
