Bears split doubleheader with Pioneers

The Bears and the Pioneers meet today for a twin bill to complete the three game opening weekend series at Pete Goldsby Field.  The Bears would win game one 8 to 5 and the Pioneers would win game tow 12-10.

 

Game one:

The Bears capitalized on some Pioneers' miscues in the field, a solid pitching performance by Teddy Webb and some better plate appearance to earn the 8 to 5 victory.

Wharton would get on the board first with a run in the first inning. The Bears would respond, in the bottom of the first, to take a 2-1 lead. Elliot Hebert would lead off and reach on an error and would score on a William Dunn single to centerfield for the Bears first run of the game. Blaise Foote would single to right field driving in Dunn for the Bears second run of the game. In the second inning, Trey Webb would hit a three-run homer to give the Bears a 5-1 lead after two. The Pioneers would scratch closer with 3 runs, in the fifth inning, but the Bears still lead 5 to 4. In the sixth inning, the Bears would add three more runs to take an 8 to 4 lead.  Elliot Hebert would hit a double driving in two runs and Hebert would then steal third and score on a fielding error by the Pioneer's catcher. The Pioneers would not quit as they would score one run in the seventh, but it was not enough as the Bears earn their first win of the season by the final score of 8 to 5.

 Teddy Webb earned the victory for the Bears. Teddy pitched four innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out five. AJ Kostic took the loss for the Pioneers.  AJ pitched two innings allowing 5 runs on 4 hits. Alex Norris and John Shahrdar pitched in relief for the Bears.

With the victory the Bears improve to 1-1 while the Pioneers fall to 1-1 on the season.

Game 1 Highlights:

Elliot Hebert went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs

Trey Webb went 1 for 4 with 3 RBIs, 1 Run and 1 Home run

William Dunn went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI and 1 Run

Braxton Gallet went 2 for 3 with 2 Runs

 

Game two:

The last game of this three-game opening weekend between the Bears and the Pioneers was a slug fest.  The Wharton Pioneers however would out slug the Bears, in the end, to hold on to the 12 to 10 victory, this evening at Pete Goldsby Field.

Wharton would erupt for five runs, in the first inning, to take a commanding lead.  The Bears would scratch across two runs, in the bottom of the first, to close the gap to 5-2 after one inning. In the first inning, Braxton Gallet would hit a single to right field driving in the Bears first one of the games. Lane Hutchinson would hit an infield single driving home the Bears second run. In the bottom of the third inning, the Bears would tie the ball game with back-to-back homers. Lane Hutchinson would get it started with a two-run homer to left field. Ethan Menard would follow with a solo homer to right field to tie the game at 5 apiece. The Pioneers would score four runs in the fifth to take a 9 to 5 lead. The Bears would scratch across a run, in the fifth, to close the gap to 9 to 6. The Bears would load the bases, in the sixth inning, via a Blaise Foote single, a Braxton Gallet walk, and Lane Hutchinson being hit by a pitch. Blaise Foote would score on a pass ball to bring the Bears within two;9-7. Each team would match each other's run in the seventh inning. The Pioneers led 10 to 8 after seven innings.  The Pioneers would add two more runs to their lead in the ninth inning.  The Bears would continue to fight till the end as they would again hit back-to-back homers by Ethan Menard and Alex Guilbeau in the ninth inning, but it was not enough as the Bears would fall 12 to 10.

 

Drew Blanchard started on the mound for the Bears. Drew pitched three and one third innings allowing 5 runs on 5 hits. Luke Evans earned the loss for the Bears. Luke pitched one and two-thirds innings allowing 4 runs on 4 hits. Ethan Prescott, Caden Akana and Sean Burkhead all pitched on relief for the Bears.

With the victory the Pioneers improve to 2-1, while the Bears fall to 1-2 on the season

Game 2 Highlights:

Zach Martin went 2 for 5 with 2 runs

Trey Webb went 1 for 6 with 1 RBI and 1 Run

Blaise Foote went 3 for 5 with 2 runs

Lane Hutchinson went 2 for 3 with 2 runs and 3 RBIs

Ethan Menard went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 3 RBIs- 2 home runs

Alex Guilbeau went 1 for 2 with 1 run, 1 RBI and 1 home run

 

The Bears will be on the road next weekend as they take part in the Galveston Tournament on Friday February 4 and Saturday February 5.  The Bears open the tournament with a 10:30 am game on Friday versus Temple College.
