Bears drop season opener to Wharton County

Saturday January 29, 2022: Baseball

Baton Rouge, LA

The Baton Rouge Bears opened the 2022 season, at Pete Goldsby Field, against the Wharton County Pioneers tonight. Unfortunately for the Bears they could not match Wharton's offensive power at the plate as they fall 13 to 1, in the opening game of the season.

The first four innings was a good ole fashion pitcher's duel between Gavin Green for the Bears and Rome Shubert for Wharton.  Nether team would get on the board until the fifth inning. In the fifth inning, the Pioneers would drive across their first run of the game when J. Rabe would hit a double to right field driving in a run. The Bears would respond, in the bottom of the fifth inning, when they would load the bases via two walks and a hit by pitch. Returning freshman infielder Blaise Foote would hit a deep sac fly to centerfield driving in the only Bears run of the ball game.  In the sixth inning, Wharton would open the game up via a 3-run homer by A. Kostic to left field After six, the Pioneers led 4 to 1.  The Pioneers would add 2 more runs in the seventh, 4 runs in the eighth and 3 more in the ninth to seal the 13 to 1 game one victory.

The Bears struggled at the plate with only 5 hits. Wharton had 16 hits in the game. The Bears also commited three errors compared to the Pionner's one.

Rome Shubert earned the victory for the Pioneers.  He pitched 3 innings allowing 0 runs on 3 hits while striking out 5. Case Roark took the loss for the Bears. Case pitched two innings allowing 5 runs on 4 hits while striking out one.  Lamar University Signee Gavin Green started the game on the mound for the Bears. Gavin pitched four and two-thirds innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 5. Slade Zeppuhar, Connor Wilson, and Alex Norris pitched in relief for the Bears.

With the victory the Pioneers improve to 1-0 while the Bears fall to 0-1 on this young season.
