Bears Baseball wins tournament opener over Nunez

The Baton Rouge Bears opened the 2021 Region XXIII tournament with a 13 to 5, eight inning run rule victory over the Nunez Pelicans at Kirsch- Rooney Stadium.

The Bears bats were on fire as they would score 10 runs, in the first three innings, to take a commanding 10 to 0 lead. In the first inning, Lane Hutchinson would single to centerfield scoring Nathan Carriere for the Bears first run of the ball game. Nathan Beyer would follow with a double to right field driving in two more runs for the Bears.  Finally, Cody Crifasi would single up the middle scoring Beyer for the Bears fourth run of the first inning. After one, the Bears led 4-0. In the second inning, William Dunn would lead off with a single and Nathan Carriere would hit a two-run homer to left field to extend the Bears led to 6 to 0. Lane Hutchinson would strike again with another double scoring William Veillon who reached on a single.   Karius Joseph would reach on an error by the Pels outfielder but Hutchinson would score on the play. After two innings, the Bears led 8-0. In the third inning, the Bears would score 2 more runs to increase their lead to 10 -0 over the Pelicans. William Veillon would double scoring Carriere who was hit by a pitch. Lane Hutchinson would single to left field scoring Veillon.  Bears starting pitcher Gavin Green held the Pels scoreless for three innings.  Nunez would get on the board with a run in the fourth. The Pelicans would strike again in the fifth with three runs. N. Brunet would lead off the fifth with a solo homer to left field.  After five innings, the Bears led 10 to 3.  Nunez would scratch across another run, in the sixth, but still trailed the Bears 10 to 4. The Bears bats would come back to life in the sixth, when Nathan Beyer would hit a sac fly scoring Carriere, who lead off with a double to right field. Nunez would score another run in the seventh. The Bears would match the Pels run, in the bottom of the seventh. The Bears would score a run, in the eighth, when Lane Hutchinson would lead off with a double and Nathan Beyer would single scoring Cameron Lewis, who pitched ran for Hutchinson to earn the 13 to 5 run rule victory.

Baton Rouge out hit Nunez 15 to 10. Both teams were credited with 1 error in the ball game.

Gavin Green pitched a complete game for the Bears to earn the victory. Gavin pitched 8 innings allowing 5 runs on 10 hits while striking out 10. Jaden Brasseaux took the loss for Nunez.  He pitched one and one-third innings allowing 8 runs on 8 hits while striking out 1.

 

Bears Game Highlights:

Creed David went 1 for 5.

Nathan Carriere went 2 for 3 with 4 runs, 2 RBIs and 1 HR.

William Veillon went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 1 BB.

Lane Hutchinson went 4 for 5 with 2 runs and 3 RBIS.

Nathan Beyer went 2 for 4 with 1 run and 4 RBIs.

Cody Crifasi went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.

William Dunn went 1 for 3 with 1 Run.

Deionte Norris went 1 for 1 with 1 run.

 

The Bears will face off against the #1 seed Delgado Dolphins, in the nightcap, at 7 pm to conclude day one of the Region XXIII tournament.
