Bears Baseball splits with #1 LSUE Bengals

The Bears and the Bengals squared off on the diamond for the eighth time this season and the 77th time overall in the series history. The Bears took an early lead, in game one, to watch it slip away with a late inning comeback by the Bengals; 8 to 5. In game two the Bears would take advantage of some inconsistent pitching and an offensive explosion at the plate to take an 11-0 game two run rule victory over the Bengals.

 

Game One:

Baton Rouge Bears would jump out to an early lead but watch the Bengals comeback to pull off the 8 to 5 game one victory.

The Bears would get on the board first with two runs, in the second inning. Karius Joseph would double up the middle scoring Parker Autry ,who reached on a walk, for the Bears first run of the ballgame.  Nathan Carriere would double to left field driving in KJ for the Bears second run of the frame. The Bears would add a run, in the fourth inning, when they would load the bases on an Autry hit by pitch, a Karius Joseph walk and a William Dunn single to right field. Nathan Carriere would single to centerfield scoring Joseph. Gavin Green started on the mound for the Bears. Gavin kept the Bengals out of rhythm on the offensive end for the first four innings. After four innings, the Bears led 3 to 0.  The Bengals bats would finally come alive, in the fifth inning. Jones would hit a two-run homer to left field for the Bengals first two runs of the ballgame.  They would scratch across another run in the frame to tie the game up at three. LSUE would take the lead, in the sixth, with a run; 4-3. The Bears would retake the lead, in the seventh, with two runs:5-4. Parker Autry would hit an infield singling scoring Crifasi who reached on a single to tie the game at 4. Lane Hutchinson would single to reach base and would score on a wild pitch to give the Bears a one-run lead.  LSUE would respond, in the bottom of the seventh, with 3 runs to retake the lead 7 to 5. The Bengals would add an insurance run, in the eighth inning, to secure the 8 to 5 comeback victory over the Bears.

Austin Andrishok earned the victory for the Bengals. He pitched two innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 1 Couch started the game on the mound for the Bengals and went six innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5. Gavin Green started on the mound for the Bears. Gavin pitched six innings allowing 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out 4 and walking 1. Jacob Poe took the loss for the Bears. Poe pitched one-third innings in relief for the Bears. Poe allowed 4 runs on 6 hits. Hunter Dupuy also pitched in relief for the Bears.

Eunice outhit Baton Rouge 13 to 10. Neither team was credited with an error in the ball game.

Bears Game 1 Highlights:

Nathan Carriere went 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs.

Cody Crifasi went 1 for 3 with 1 Run.

William Veillon went 1 for 5.

Lane Hutchinson went 1 for 4 with 1 Run.

Deionte Norris went 1 for 2.

Parker Autry went 1 for 2 with 1 Run, 1 RBI and 1BB

Karius Joseph went 1 for 3 with 2 Runs, 1 RBI and 1BB

William Dunn went 1 for 3.

 

Game two:

The Bears earned an 11-0 game two, run rule victory over the Bengals behind a complete game shutout performance by Christopher Courville. The Bears bats came alive, in game two, pounding out ten hits.

The Bears would score five runs, in the first inning, to take a commanding lead. The Bears would load the bases with a single by Karius Joseph, a double by Nathan Carriere and a hit by a pitch by William Veillon. Lane Hutchinson would follow and reach by being hit by a pitch scoring KJ for the Bears first of many runs in the ballgames.  Deionte Norris would follow with a walk scoring another run. Cody Crifasi would hit an infield single driving in Veillion. Alex Guilbeau would be next, and he would hit a sac fly to right filed scoring Hutch for the Bears fourth run of the ballgame. Finally, Deionte Norris would score the Bears fifth run of the frame on a pass ball.  The Bears would lead 5 to 0, after one inning.  In the second the Bears would scratch across another run when Nathan Carriere would single and score on a Lane Hutchinson single to left field.  After two innings, the Bears led 6-0. The Bears would load the bases again in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Nathan Carriere would hit into a fielder's choice driving home a run. William Veillon would follow with a single to left field scoring another run. Lane Hutchinson would then single to right field driving in two more runs.  After three innings, the Bears led 10 to 0. The Bears would add an insurance run, in the fifth inning, to secure the 11 to 0, five inning run rule victory.  The LSUE Bengals struggled to get anything going on the offensive end. Christopher Courville held the Bengals out of sync at the plate all game.

 

Christopher Courville, (UNO Commit) pitched a complete game shutout for the Bears. The lefty pitched five innings allowing 0 runs on 5 hits while striking out 1.  Rodriguez took the loss for the Bengals. He allowed 5 runs on 2 hits and did not get out of the first inning.

Baton Rouge outhit LSUE 10 to 5. Neither team was credited with an error in the ballgame.

 

Bears Game 2 Highlights:

Karius Joseph went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 BB.

Nathan Carriere went 3 for 4 with 4 runs and 1 RBI.

William Veillon went 1 for 2 with 2 runs, 1 BB and 1 RBI.

Lane Hutchinson went 2 for 2 with 1 run and 4 RBIs.

Cody Crifasi went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

Alex Guilbeau went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Jonas LeBourgeois went 1 for 2 with 1 run.

 

With the split the Baton Rouge Bears improve to 27-23 on the season while LSUE improves to 42-5 on the season.

 

These two teams will meet again tomorrow, Sunday May 2 in a doubleheader starting at 4 pm at Brusly High School.
