Bears Baseball splits with Delgado Dolphins in NOLA

After a week's delay, due to weather issues, the Baton Rouge Bears and the Delgado Dolphins were finally able to square off on the diamond, this afternoon, in New Orleans at Kirsch- Rooney Stadium. The Bears would win game one 8 to 3 and the Dolphins would win game two 10-5.

 

Game One:

The Bears would use a huge fourth inning and a complete game pitching performance from Christopher Courville to defeat the Delgado Dolphins 8 to 3, this afternoon at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

During the first three innings, neither team could find any offense as it was a good ole fashion pitching duel between Courville and Cook. The Bears would finally breakthrough, in the fourth inning, when they would put up seven runs to take a commanding lead.  The inning was highlighted by a William Veillon single scoring Crifasi, who walked, a Lane Hutchinson double driving in two more runs, a Karius Joseph single scoring two more runs and a Cody Crifasi single scoring another run.  The Bears would bat around in the inning.  Delgado would respond with two runs, in the bottom of the fourth, but they still trailed the Bears 7 to 2.  Delgado would scratch across a run, in the sixth inning. After six, the Bears led 7 to 3. The Bears would add an insurance run in the seventh when William Veillon would single to centerfield scoring Nathan Carriere who reached on a fielder's choice.  Courville would get three fly outs, in the bottom of the seventh, to secure the Bears 8 to 3 game one conference victory.

Sophomore lefty Christopher Courville pitched a complete game for the Bears to earn the victory. Chris pitched seven innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5 and walking 3.  Cook took the loss for the Dolphins. He pitched three and a third innings allowing 6 runs on 3 hits while striking out 2.

Baton Rouge out hit Delgado 7 to 6. Each team was credited with one error in the ball game.

 

Bears Game 1 Highlights:

 Cody Crifasi went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and 1 BB.

Nathan Carriere went 1 for 4 with 1 Run.

William Veillon went 2 for 4 with 1 run and 2 RBIs.

Lane Hutchinson went 1 for 3 with 1 Run and 2 RBIs.

Karius Joseph went 1 for 3 with 1 Run and 2 RBIs.

 

Game Two:

Delgado would jump out to an early lead that the Bears could not catch up too as they would fall in game two 10 to 5.  The Bears struggled to get that timely hit to scratch across runs.

Delgado had their bats gong, in the first inning, as they would score 5 runs via two homeruns by Jobert and Lambert to take the early 5 to 0 lead. Delgado's starting pitcher Landreneau kept the Bears' offense out of sync for the first four innings. Delgado would add to their lead, in the third inning, with three runs.  After three innings, the Dolphins led 8 to 0. In the fourth, the Dolphins would tact on two more runs to take a 10-0 lead over the Bears.  The Bear's bats finally came to life, in the fourth inning, when they would score 4 runs. Alex Guilbeau would lead off with a single to left field.  Tristan Frederick would replace Guilbeau on the base path. William Dunn would double to left field driving in Frederick for the Bears first run of the ball game. William Veillon would hit a two-run homer to deep left field. The Bears would then hit back-to-back to back singles driving in another run.  After five innings, the Bears trailed 10 to 4. The Bears would scratch across a run, in the eighth inning, when Parker Autry would double to centerfield and William Dunn would hit a sac fly scoring Autry.  That was all the Bears could mustard as they would fall in game two 10 to 5 to the Delgado Dolphins.

Landreneau earned the victory for the Dolphins. He pitched eight and two-thirds innings allowing 5 runs on 13 hits while striking out 11. Jacob Poe took the loss for the Bears. Poe pitched three innings allowing 9 runs on 9 hits while striking out 1. Drew Blanchard, TJ Thomas Jr. and Hunter Dupuy all pitched in relief for the Bears.

Both teams pounded out 14 hits.  The game did not see any errors.

 

Bears Game 2 Highlights:

William Dunn went 1 for 4 with 1 Run and 2 RBIs.

Nathan Carriere went 2 for 5.

William Veillon went 1 for 5 with 1 Run, 2 RBIs and 1 HR

Lane Hutchinson went 1 for 4 with 1 Run.

Zach Martin went 2 for 5.

Karius Joseph ent 1 for 3 with 1 BB and 1 RBI

Jonas LeBourgeois went 1 for 1.

Parker Autry went 2 for 2 with 1 Run.

Alex Guilbeau went 1 for 2.

Cody Crifasi went 2 for 4.

 

With the split the Baton Rouge Bears improve to 23-19, 7-3 in conference play and Delgado Dolphins improve to 24-11, 7-3 in conference play.

 

Tomorrow Tuesday April 20, the series shifts to the capitol city as the Bears and the Dolphins square off in a 4 pm doubleheader at Brusly High School
