Bears Baseball splits conference opener at Delgado

After taking a year off due to Covid-19, the Baton Rouge Bears and the Delgado Dolphins renewed their rivalry this afternoon on the diamond at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.  The Bears and Dolphins would split the doubleheader, with Delgado winning game one- 7 to 2 and Baton Rouge winning game two- 6 to 2.

Game One:

The Dolphins would put up two crooked number innings to defeat the Bears 7 to 2, in game one of today's doubleheader.  The Bears struggled, at the plate, to get anything started. The Dolphins pitchers kept the Bears off balance all game.

Delgado would put up a 3 spot, in the second inning, to take the early advantage.  The Dolphins' inning was highlighted by a two-run homer by Johnson to left field. The Dolphins would strike again with another crooked number this time in the third inning via a 3-run homer to center field by Lambert.  After three innings, Delgado held a 6 to 0 lead over the Bears. The Bears would finally break through in the fourth inning with a run. William Veillon would double to left field and score on a Nathan Beyer double to left field, for the Bears first run of the ball game. After four the Bears trailed 6 to 1.  The Bears would scratch across another run, in the fifth inning, when Parker Autry would walk, steal second and score on a single by Cody Crifasi.  Delgado would tact on two more runs, in the fifth inning, to secure the 7 to 2 victory.

 

C. Cook earned the victory for the Delgado Dolphins.  He pitched six and two-thirds innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 7. Christopher Courville took the loss for Baton Rouge. The sophomore lefty threw four innings allowing 6 runs on 5 hits while striking out 3 and walking 1. Blaise Foote pitched 2 innings in relief for the Bears.

Delgado out hit Baton Rouge 7 to 3. Baton Rouge was credited for two errors in the ball game.

Bears Game 1 Highlights:

William Veillon went 1 for 3 with 1 Run.

Nathan Beyer went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI.

Cody Crifasi went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI.

 

Game 2:

In game two the Bears were dominate at the plate, on the mound and in the field as they defeat the Dolphins 6 to 2.

The Bears would get on the board first, in the third inning, via a solo homer to left field by Nathan Carriere. Jacob Poe was dominating on the mound for the Bears. Poe kept the Dolphins off balanced at the plate and scoreless for seven innings.  The Bears would add another run, in the six innings, when Karius Joseph would double to right field and score on a Cody Crifasi single. After six innings, the Bears led 2 to 0. The Bears would get the offense going, in the seventh, with back-to-back singles by William Veillon and William Dunn.  Veillon would score on a fielder's choice bunt by Lane Hutchinson.  Dunn would score on Karius Joseph's second double of the ball game to right field.  After seven, the Bears led 4 to 0.  The Bears would tact on two insurance runs, in the eighth inning, via a Lane Hutchinson single to center field.  Delgado would score their only two runs of the ball game, in the eighth inning.  After eight, the Bears led 6 to 2.  Blaine Hardy would relieve Poe, in the ninth, and face the minimum number of  batters to secure the victory.

 

Jacob Poe earned the victory for the Bears. Poe pitched 8 innings allowing 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out 6 and walking 0. Blaine Hardy pitched one scoreless inning in relief for the Bears. Maccord took the loss for the Dolphins. He pitched two and two-thirds innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits.

 Baton Rouge out hit Delgado 15 to 8. Neither team committed an error in the ball game.

 

Bears Game 2 Highlights:

Nathan Carriere went 3 for 5 with 2 Runs, 1 RBI and 1HR

William Veillon went 1 for 3 with 2 runs and 1 BB.

William Dunn wet 2 for 4 with 1 run.

Lane Hutchinson went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

Karius Joseph went 2 for 3 with 1 Run and 1 RBI.

Cody Crifasi went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI.

Alex Guilbeau went 1 for 5.

Creed David went 2 for 5.

 

With the split, the Baton Rouge Bears improve to 16-14, 1-1 in conference play, while Delgado improves to 19-5. 1-1 on the season.

 

Next up for the Bears will be a conference match up with the Nunez Pelicans this Wednesday March 31 starting at 4 pm.
