Bears drop a pair of games to Howard College Hawks

Two late inning rallies by the Howard College Hawks leads them to a doubleheader sweep of the Baton Rouge Bears.

Game 1:

A four run seventh inning by the Howard College Hawks propelled them to a 7 to 5 comeback victory this evening against the Baton Rouge Bears on the campus of Stephen F Austin.

Howard College would get on the board first via a two run homer by C Paxil, in the third inning. Baton Rouge would respond with a run, in the bottom of the third. Tristen Frederick who walked, stole second and third would score on a pass ball for the Bears first run of the ball game. After three innings, Howard led Baton Rouge 2 to 1.

The Hawks would add to their lead, in the fourth inning, via a solo homer by K Ortiz. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bears would scratch closer with another run. The Bears would take advantage of some inconsistent pitching by the Hawks to manufacture a run. Karius Joseph would walk, advance to second on a wild pitch, advance to third on another wild pitch and score on a Deionte Norris double up the middle. After five, the Bears trailed 3 to 2. In the six inning, the Bears would score two runs on a sacrifice by Parker Autry to take a 4 to 3 lead. The Hawks would rally and score four runs, in the top of the seventh, to retake the lead 7 to 4.  The Bears would attempt a rally, in the bottom of the seventh, but they would only score one run thus losing game one of the series 7 to 5.

 

K. Anglin started in the mound for the Hawks. He pitched seven innings allowing 5 Runs, 3 Earned Runs on 4 Hit while striking out 11 and walking 5. Christopher Courville started on the mound for the Bears. Chris pitched 6 innings allowing 3 Runs on 5 Hits, while striking out 4 and walking 2. TJ Thomas Jr. and Blaine Hardy pitched in relief for the Bears.

 

Howard College out hit Baton Rouge 6 to 4. The Hawks were credited with 1 error compared to 3 for the Bears.

 

Bears Game 1 Highlights:

Nathan Carriere went 2 for 4 with 1 Run

William Veillon went 0-2 with 1 Run and 1 BB

Parker Autry collected 2 RBIs

Lane Hutchinson went 1 for 3

Deionte Norris went 1 for 1 with 1 BB and 1 RBI

 

 

Game 2:

The Baton Rouge Bears could not find their offensive fire power, in the second game, and again a late game rally by the Howard College Hawks helps defeat the Bears 4 to 2.

 

It was a good ole fashion pitching duel for the first four innings as neither team could find that timely hit to get on the board. The Bears would break through with two runs, in the fifth inning, to take the lead;2-0.  William Veillon would double to right field driving in David and Carriere.  Howard would respond and score 4 runs, in the sixth inning, to take a 4 to 2 lead that they would not relinquish.

 

Ethan Coombes earned the victory for the Howard College Hawks. He pitched five and two thirds innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 8. Jacob Poe earned the loss for the Baton Rouge Bears. Poe pitched five and two-thirds inning allowing 4 runs on 10 hits while striking out 5 and walking 1. Dane Wise pitched one and one-third innings in relief for the Bears. Dane allowed 0 Runs on 1 hit while striking out 1.

Howard College outhit Baton Rouge 11 to 3. Both teams committed 1 error in the ballgame.


Bears Game 2 Highlights:

Nathan Carriere went 1 for 3 with 1 Run

William Veillon went 1 for 4 with 1BB and 2 RBIs

Alex Guilbeau went 1 for 2

 

With the pair of victory Howard College improves to 11-4 while Baton Rouge falls to 9-10 on the season.

 

These two team will meet again tomorrow Saturday March 6 in a doubleheader starting at 1 pm at Jaycees Field on the campus of Stephen F Austin.
