Bears Baseball sweeps day with Wharton Pioneers

Baton Rouge Bears found their offensive stroke combined with some solid pitching performances to sweep the day's games against the Wharton County Junior College Pioneers.

 

Game 1:

Baton Rouge found those timely hits they were missing in the series opener. Their offense was on fire as they would score early and finish big to earn the 7 to 3 victory, in game two of the series.

The Bears would open the game with a lead off homer by Nathan Carriere to left field to grab an early lead. They would tact on another run, in the first, when Gage Breithaupt would double up the middle driving in Karius Joseph who reached on a fielder's choice. Wharton would respond with a run in the bottom of the first. After one, the Bears held a slim 2 to 1 lead.  Wharton would tie the game at 2 with a run, in the fourth inning. Baton Rouge would score 2 runs, in the fifth, to retake the lead; 4 to 2. In the fifth, Karius Joseph would lead off with a double to left field and would score on a Gage Breithaupt double to left field. Lane Hutchinson would join the hit parade with a infield single. Cody Crifasi would be next and he would hit a bunt single driving in Breithaupt for the Bears second run of the inning.  The Pioneers would scratch closer with a run in the sixth; 4 to 3.  The Bears would put the game away in the seventh with three runs. Blaine Hardy would take down the Pioneers in order, in the seventh, to preserve the 7 to 3 victory.

 

Christopher Courville earned the victory for the Bears. Chris pitched 4 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 3.  Blaine Hardy pitched 3 innings in relief for the Bears . Blaine allowed 1 run off of 1 hit while walking 3 and striking out 3. Andrew Hernandez took the loss for Wharton. He pitched three and two-thirds innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 1 and walking 1.

Bears Game 1 Highlights:

Nathan Carriere went 1 for 3 with 1Run, 1 RBI, 1 BB and 1 HR

William Veillon went 1 for 4

Blaise Foote went 1 for 3

Karius Joseph went 1 for 2 with 2 Runs

Gage Breithaupt went 2 for 2 with 1 Run and 2 RBIs

Lane Hutchinson went 1 for 4

Cody Crifasi went 2 for 4 with 1 Run

 

 

Game 2:

Baton Rouge offense exploded early to capture the 14 to 8 victory over the Pioneers.

The Bears would get on the board first with two runs in the first inning for the early lead. William Veillon would walk, steal second and score on a Zach Martin single to left field. Parker Autry would single to right field driving in Martin for the Bears second run.  Wharton would counter with a run in the bottom of the first.  After one, the Bears led 2 to 1.  

Baton Rouge would erupt for five runs in the second, highlighted by a Zach Martin two run homer to left field.  Wharton would get a run back via a solo homer by S Tucker, in the bottom of the second.  After two, the Bears led 7 to 2.

Wharton would score three runs, in the third, to close the Bears led to 7 to 5. The Bears would take advantage of some inconsistent pitching by the Pioneers to score five runs, in the fourth inning. After four, the Bears led 12 to 5. 

Wharton would score a run in the sixth, and two in the seventh to close the gap; 12 to 8. The Bears would score two runs, in the ninth, to seal the 14 to 8 victory. Lane Hutchinson would open the inning with an infield single. Creed David would reach on a bunt. Both Hutchinson and David would score on a infield single by William Veillon.

Baton Rouge out hit Wharton 12 to 9. Baton Rouge was credited with 1 error while Wharton committed 2.

Gavin Green started on the mound for the Bears. Gavin pitched  2.1 innings allowing 5 runs on 7 hits while striking out 2. Peter Holden earns the victory for the Bears. Peter pitches 3.2 innings allowing 3 runs on 1 hit while walking 4 and striking out 6. Deointe Norris pitched three innings in relief for the Bears . Deointe pitched 3 innings allowing 0 runs on 1 hit while walking 0 and striking out 4. Rome Schubert earned the loss for Wharton. He pitched 1.1 innings allowing 7 runs on 7 hits while striking out 1.

 

Bears Game 2 Highlights:

Nathan Carriere went 2 for 6 with 1 Run and 3 RBIs

William Veillon went 1 for 3 with 3 BB and 3 RBIs

Blaise Foote went 1 for 4 with 1BB and 1 RBI

Zach Martin went 2 for 5 with 3 Runs, 1BB, 3 RBIs and 1 HR

Gage Breithaupt went 2 for 4 with 1 Run, 1 BB and 1 RBI

Parker Autry went 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs

Lane Hutchinson went 1 for 4 with 2 Runs

Creed David went 1 for 4 with 2 Runs and 1 RBI

 

Up next for the Bears will be a road trip to Alexandria on Wednesday to take on the LSUA Generals in a doubleheader starting at 3 pm.
