Bears Baseball drop opener to Wharton

Wharton County Junior College Pioneers jumped out early and the Baton Rouge Bears could not catch up as they lose the series opener 8 to 2.

 

Wharton would open the scoring, in the first, with a pair of runs off a double by P Villarreal, to take the early 2-0 lead. The Pioneers would add three more runs, in the third inning, highlighted by a P. Villarreal two run homer to left field. After three innings, Wharton led 5 to 0. The Bears would finally get on the board with a run, in the fourth. Deointe Norris would reach on an error and score on a Karius Joseph sac fly to left field.  Wharton's P Villarreal would strike again in the fifth, this time with a three run homer to left field to extend the Pioneers lead to 8 to 1.  The Bears would not quit as they would scratch across a run, in the seventh, when William Veillon would single to left field scoring Creed David who had single to second earlier in the frame. Unfortunately, it was not enough as the Pioneers would take the series opener 8 to 2.

 

Baton Rouge actually out hit Wharton 7 to 6 but they could not find the timely hits. Wharton was credited with an error in the ball game.

 

Cole Ferguson earned the victory for the Pioneers. He pitched 5 innings, allowing 1 run in 3 hits while striking out 4. Jacob Poe earned the loss for the Bears. Jacob pitched 4 innings allowing 5 runs on 4 hits while striking out 4. T J Thomas Jr and Blaise Foote pitched 4 innings in relief for the Bears.

William Veillon went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI

William Dunn went 1 for 4

Karius Joseph went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI

Zack Martin went 1 for 1

Creed David went 1 for 4 with 1 

 

The Bears will be back in action tomorrow in a doubleheader with the Wharton Pioneers at 1 pm at Corbett Park.
