Bears lose first game of Region XXIII Tournament to Nunez

Saturday May 4, 2019: Baseball

New Orleans, LA

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Nunez Pelicans finally got to open the Region XXIII baseball tournament today at Turchin Stadium, on the campus of Tulane University.  Unfortunately, the Bears could not overcome an early deficient as they fall, in game one 11 to 1, in six innings to the Nunez Pelicans.

Nunez took advantage of the Bears inconsistent pitching to score five runs, in the first inning, to take the early led. Three of the Pelicans runs, in the first inning, came off of a three run homerun by Z. Dorcey.  Baton Rouge would scratch across a run, in the bottom of the first, when William Veillon would single up the middle and score on a pass ball. The Bears would struggle at the plate as they could not get their offense going against Pelican's pitcher C. Daigle.  The Pelicans would score one run in the second, one in the fourth, and two a pieces in the fifth and sixth innings to grab the 11 to 1; run rule victory over the Bears.

C. Daigle pitched a complete game for the Pelicans to earn the victory.  He pitched six innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five.  Joseph Battaglia III began the game on the mound for the Bears but was only able to throw two-thirds of an inning, allowing five runs on three hits.  Tanner Young, Trevor Benoit, Salvador Lusco and Braxton Dufrene all threw in relief for the Bears.

Bears Highlights:

William Veillon went 1 for 3 with 1 run

Luke Lancon went 2 for 3

Samuel Jarrell went 1 for 3

Bo Barrilleaux went 1 for 2

Cody Crifasi went 1 for 2

The Bears will be back in action later this afternoon versus the Delgado Dolphins has they look for the victory to stave off elimination.  The game is set for 6 pm at Turchin Stadium on the campus of Tulane University.
