Bears split with Whitecaps

Baton Rouge Bears and the Galveston Whitecaps would split the day's games, this afternoon at Pete Goldsby Field.  Baton Rouge would dominate game one for a 9 to 1 victory. Galveston would rally late to take game two, in extra innings, 7 to 6.

The Bears would dominate game one, as they would score at least one run in the first five innings of the game while Tristin Cosby kept the Whitecaps off balance at the plate during that time span. The Bears would get on the board first with a run, in the first inning, when Thomas Garber would drive in William Veillon, who singled to centerfield to open the inning. Baton would would add to their lead with two more runs, in the second. Cameron Crawford would double to left field scoring Cameron Guitreau and Luke Lancon. In the third inning, the Bears would take advantage of some Whitecaps' defensive miscues to score three more runs to take a 6 to 0 lead, after three. Cameron Crawford would open the fourth inning with a double to left field and he would score on a fly ball by Samuel Jarrell. Finally in the fifth inning, the Bears would tact on two more runs to take a commanding 9 to 0 lead, in which, they would not relinquish.  Galveston would finally get on the board, in the sixth inning, with one run but it was not enough to overcome the Bears' huge lead.

Baton Rouge outhit Galveston 10 to 5.

Tristin Cosby toed the rubber for the Bears complete game victory.  Tristin pitched seven innings allowing one run on five hits while striking out nine. Jacob Jimenez took the loss for Galveston.  He pitched three innings allowing six runs on six hits.

Game 1 Bears Highlights:

William Veillon went 2 for 4 with 1 Run and 1 RBI

Cameron Crawford went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI and 1 Run

Thomas Garber went 1 for 4 with 1 Run and 1RBI

Cameron Guitreau went 3 for 4 with 3 Runs and 1 RBI

Luke Lancon went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 2 RBIs

Game two was a tight back and forth affair that went into extra innings where the Whitecaps would score a run, in the top of the tenth, to take the 7 to 6 victory over the Bears. Galveston would score first with one run, in the first.  The Bears would respond and tie the game, in the bottom of the first, with a run of their own. Samuel Jarrell would single to center field scoring William Veillon, who opened the inning with a single to left field.  Galveston would score a run, in the second inning, to take a 2 to 1 lead, after two. Baton Rouge would retake the lead at 3 to 2, in the third inning, when Samuel Jarrell would hit a single up the middle scoring Crifasi and Veillon. The Whitecaps would score two runs, in the fourth inning, to retake the lead at 4 to 3. In the fifth inning, Thomas Garber would hit into a fielder's choice scoring Crawford, would singled to left field to open the frame.  This would tie the game up at 4, after five innings. Galveston would break the tie with a run, in the seventh, and add to their lead with a run, in the eighth, to take a 6 to 4 lead. Baton Rouge would tie the game with two runs, in the eighth. Cameron Crawford would triple to the gap in center scoring two runs. At the end of regulation the game was tied at six. In the tenth, Galveston would take advantage of a defensive miscue and some inconsistent pitching by the Bears to scratch across one run to take a 7 to 6 lead. The Bears would get runners on, in the tenth, but they could not get them around thus losing game two 7 to 6, in ten innings.

Galveston out hit Baton Rouge 11 to 9.

Jared Adams led the Whitecaps to victory. He pitched one inning allowing zero runs on one hits.  Tanner Young took the loss for the Bears. Tanner pitched one inning allowing one run on one hit. Evan Becnel started the game for the Bears. Evans lasted five innings allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out four. Jordy Adams, Trevor Benoit and Christopher Sagrera all pitched in relief for the Bears.

William Veillon went 2 for 5 with 3 runs

Cameron Crawford went 2 for 5 with 1 Run and 2RBIs

Samuel Jarrell went 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs

Thomas Garber had 1 RBI

Cameron Guitreau went 1 for 3 with 2BB

Cody Crifasi went 2 for 4 with 2 Runs

 

The Bears will return to action on Monday April 22 as they travel to Beaumont, Texas to take on Wharton County Junior College at 5pm at Lamar University.
