Bears defeat Pioneers in Home Opener Rematch

Saturday February 2, 2019: Baseball

Baton Rouge, LA

Bears revenge their home opening loss to the Wharton Pioneers, this afternoon, at Pete Goldsby Field by the final score of 11 to 10. Neither team wanted to give the other an advantage as the game was back and forth till the last out.

Wharton scored first with one run, in the first, to take the early lead but Baton Rouge would respond with three runs, in the bottom of the frame,  to take a 3 to 1 lead. Donavon Murray would lead off with a walk. William Veillon would double to centerfield to advance Murray to third base. Donavon Murray would score on a Bo Barrilleaux single to third base. On that same play, the Bears would score two more off the Pioneers throwing errors.

Baton Rouge would add to their lead when they would score one run, in the second inning. Cameron Guitreau and Donavon Murray would hit back to back singles.  Murray would score when Cameron Crawford would ground out to shortstop.

The Bears offense would finally come to life, in the third inning, with four runs to take a 8 to 1 lead over the Pioneers.  Thomas Garber, Bo Barrilleaux and Cody Crifasi would all single. Cameron Guitreau would then double scoring all three bears.  Guitreau would then score on a bulk by the Pioneers pitcher.

Baton Rouge would add a run, in the fourth, to take a commanding 9 to 1 lead.  The Wharton Pioneers did not lay down, they fought back and scored six runs, in the fifth inning, to close the gap but they still trailed 9 to 7.  Baton Rouge would add a run in the sixth when Cody Crifasi, who singled to lead off the inning, would score on a Cameron Crawford ground out to third base. Wharton would score two more runs, in the eighth, to get within one run at 10 to 9. Baton Rouge would add a much needed insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Cameron Crawford would lead off with a homer to left field to take a 11 to 9 lead.  Wharton's rally would fall short as they would only score on run in the ninth inning.  The Pioneers had two runners on with two outs when D. Serbantez hit a shot to left field, but Donavon Murray made a fantastic grab at the wall for the third out to end the game.  Bears hold on to win 11 to 10 this afternoon.

Brett Fisackerly earned the victory for the Bears.  He pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out one. Dane Wise, Evan Becnel, Garrison Beiriger and Christopher Courville all pitched in relief for the Bears. Courville would earn the save for the Bears.

Jonathan Jumenez took the loss for Wharton County, pitching two and two-thirds innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits.
