Wharton Defeats Baton Rouge in Home Opener

Wharton County Junior College Pioneers used two big innings to defeat Baton Rouge 9 to 1, in BRCC home opener at Pete Goldsby Field.

The Bears got on the board first with their one and only run, in the first inning.  Cameron Crawford singled to third base, William Veillon followed with a single to centerfield, and Samuel Jarrell reached on catchers interference to load the bases. Crawford would score on a wild pitch. Wharton would rally back, in the second inning, with five runs to take a 5-1 lead after two innings.  Wharton would add four more runs, in the fourth inning, to take a commanding 9 to 1 lead that they would not relinquish.  The Bears tried to rally, in the sixth, with back to back singles by Cameron Crawford and William Veillon  then Thomas Garber was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Baton Rouge was unable to score a run in the inning.  Both teams were held scoreless in the final five innings of the game. 

Cameron Foster earned the win for the Pioneers. He pitched six innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out nine. Tanner Young took the loss for the Bears. Young pitched four innings, allowing eight hits and nine runs.

Wharton County improves to 2-0, while Baton Rouge falls to 0-4.

Bears Highlights:

Cameron Crawford went 2-3 with 1 Run

William Veillon went 2 for 3 with 1 BB

Trevor Benoit pitched two scoreless innings in relief allowing only 2 hits

Cole Harper pitched one inning of scoreless baseball, allowing only 1 hit.

 

The Bears will be back in action tomorrow February 2 at 12 pm versus Wharton County Junior College at 6 pm versus Bossier Parish.  Bossier Parish and Wharton will play each other at 3 pm.  All games will be played at Pete Goldsby Field.
