Bears split with Whitecaps

Baton Rouge splits with Galveston  today at Bernard Davis Field. Bears take game one 12 to 8. Whitecaps come from behind to walk off with a 4 to 3 win in game two.

Bears bats came alive early and often in today's first game versus Galveston . Bears capitalized on six Whitecaps errors and some clutch hitting to win game one 12 to 8. The Bears scored five runs in the first. Samuel Jarrell would drive in Blanchard and Barrilleaux with a single to centerfield. Lee Whitaker would drive in Michael Smith with a single to centerfield. Cameron Crawford would cap off the inning driving in Whitaker and Jarrell with a single up the middle. After a half inning, the Bears led 5 to 0. In the bottom of the first, Galveston responded with two runs but still trailed 5 to 2.

Whitecaps would inch closer when they added a run in the third but still trailed 5 to 3 after three innings.

Baton Rouge would tact on three runs to their lead in the fifth. It started when Michael Smith would single to right field scoring Kolby Blanchard who had reached on an error. Lee Whitaker would step up and hit a two run homer to right field. After five innings,  the Bears had a 8 to 3 lead.

Bears would score again in the sixth. Kolby Blanchard would single to the shortstop and score on a Garrett Barrilleaux single to left field.  Samuel Jarrell would single to right field driving in Barrilleaux. Lee Whitaker would continue his hot hitting with a single  up the middle driving in Michael Smith, who walked.  BRCC took a commanding 11 to 3 lead after six innings.

BRCC would add another run in the seventh to extend their lead to 12 to 3. Michael Smith would single to third driving in Evan Vickers, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

Galveston would not go down easy scoring five runs in the finally two innings. 

Keith Meier would get the win for the Bears pitching seven and one third innings allowing 5 Runs on 12 Hits while striking out 7. K. Lunsford would get the loss for Galveston pitching five innings allowing 8 Runs on 8 Hits while striking out 6.

 

Bears Game 1 Highlights:

Lee Whitaker went 3 for 5 with 2 Runs and 4 RBIs. Hit a homer in the fifth.

Kolby Blanchard went 2 for 6 with 3 Runs

Garrett Barrilleaux went 1 for 3 with 2 Runs, 1 RBI and 1 BB 

Michael Smith went 3 for 4 with 3 Runs, 2 RBIs and 1 BB 

Samuel Jarrell went 3 for 4 with 1 Run and 3 RBIs 

Cameron Crawford went 1 for 5 with 1 Run and 2 RBIs 

 

Galveston scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with a 4 to 3 victory over Baton Rouge in game two. Bears got on the board first with a run when Kolby Blanchard walked then stole second and third and scored on an error by the catcher. Bears would score another run in the second when Lee Whitaker scored on a sac fly by Cameron Crawford. Galveston would tie the game at two in the third inning. The Bears would take a one run lead in the fourth when Michael Smith scored on a Lee Whitaker ground out to second. Galveston would not go down easy as they would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win game two 4 to 3. 

Bears Game 2 Highlights:

Lee Whitaker went 1 for 2 with 1 Run, 1 RBI and 1 BB

Cameron Crawford went 0-1 with 1 RBI 

Jonah Overland went 1 for 2 

Brandon Morris pitched three innings allowing 2 runs on 1 hit while striking out 4

 

Bears will be back in action on April 9, when they take on Nunez Community College at Chalmette High School. Doubleheader starts at 4pm.
