For the second day, Wharton Pioneers were too much for the Baton Rouge Bears. The Pioneers beat the Bears 12 to 3.  Wharton outhit the Bears 10 to 6. Kyle Gruller was the winning pitcher for Wharton.  He pitched four innings allowing three runs on four hits and striking out six Bears.  Dillen Miller took the lost for the Bears.  Dillen pitched three innings, allowing 6 runs on five hits and striking out four Pioneers.  Wharton County Junior College improves to a record of 5- 1, while Baton Rouge falls to 0-4.

Wharton got on the board in the first inning, when Maley was walked, Brandl was hit by a pitch and Serbantez hit the ball to the pitcher but Dillen overthrew first base, which scored Maley.  Ortiz doubles to left fielder scoring two more Pioneers.   The Bears struck back in the bottom of the first when Seth Daugherty was walked, then advanced to third on a pass ball and then scored on a Jonah Overland single to right field.  At the end of the first inning, the Pioneers had a 3 to 1 lead over the Bears.

Wharton continued their timely hot hitting in the second inning when they plated three runs to take a 6 to 1 lead over the Bears.  Again the Bears responded, in the bottom of the second inning, with two runs of their own.  It started with a Troy Banks walk, an Evan Vickers double to centerfield and a single to centerfield by Seth Daugherty to score Banks.  Vickers scored after Kolby Blanchard hit into a fielders choice.  After two complete, Wharton led 6 to 3 over the Bears.

The score would remain at 6 to 3 until the top of the sixth inning when Wharton scored a run to take  a 7 to 3 lead over the Bears. Wharton broke the game open in the eighth when Serbantez hit a three run homerun for the Pioneers. The Pioneers also added two more runs in the inning to take a 12 to 3 lead over the Bears.

Deryk Serbantez had a day for the Pioneers driving in four runs.

Bears Highlights:

Seth Daugherty went 1 for 2, 1 run , 1 RBI and 2BB

Evan Vickers went 1 for 3 

Dillen Miller pitched 3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 5 Hits, walked 3 and struckout 4.

 

The nightcap game agaisnt Nunez was canceled due to weather issues.  The Bears will be back in action next Saturday February 10,as they take part in the Tournament of Champions.  The first game will be against Navarro at 12 pm at Galveston College.  Check the BRCC website for all game time for the Bears in the Tournament of Champions.
