Bears baseball falls 18 to 7 to San Jac Gators

Friday January 26, 2018: Baseball

Baton Rouge, LA

Despite six RBI's by Keith Meier, the Bears could not hold off the late charge by the San Jac Gators.  San Jacinto beats Baton Rouge 18 to 7, in 8 inning, here in the nightcap of the 2018 opening day series.  Unlike in game one versus Panola, the Bears bats came alive early.  Seth Daugherty reached on a error to start the game, and Tyler Caston was walked to have two Bears on the bases.  That is when Keith Meier struck for the first time with a single up the middle to score Seth and Tyler.  After one inning, the Bears led the Gators 2 to 0.

San Jac came back and scored a run, in the top of the second inning, to close the gap to 1-2.  The Bears added two more runs in the fourth inning. Seth Daugherty led off the fourth inning with a single to centerfield, then Jonah Overland singled to right field followed by a single to right field by Hunter David to load the bases. Keith Meier hit a single up the middle to score Seth and Jonah and extend their led over the Gators to 4 to 1.

The top of the fourth brought a change in pitchers for the Bears.  Dillen Miller who started the game was lifted for Salvador Lusco. Lusco came in got the two batters he faced out. Michael Russell replaced Lusco in the fifth inning for the Bears.  Russell gave up a homerun to start off the inning and two walks before he was lifted for pitcher Evan Becnel. San Jac scored 3 runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6 to 4 lead over the Bears. In the bottom of the frame the Bears scored a run.  Tyler Caston was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a pass ball and scored on a Hunter David single.  After five complete the San Jac Gators held a 6 to 5 led over the Bears.

San Jac added two more runs in the six inning and 4 more runs in the seventh inning.  The Bears added 2 runs in the sixth with another single by Keith Meier to score Seth and Tyler. At the end of seventh inning, San Jac had a 12 to 7 lead over the Bears.  San Jac added six more runs in the eighth inning to take a 18 to 7 led over the Bears.  The Bears could not score in the bottom of the eighth inning so the game was called in the eighth inning, due to the run rule.

Even Becnel took the loss for the Bears. Baton Rouge used 8 pitcher in today contest, while San Jacinto used 5 pitchers.  The Gators out hit the Bears 13 to 9. Baton Rouge committed three error compared to San Jac's 2 errors.  The story of tonights' game was timely errors by the Bears and a  inconsistent bullpen.
