Bears Split Doubleheader with Wharton County

BRCC baseball hosted Wharton County Junior College on Saturday afternoon at Pete Goldsby Field. The two teams played a doubleheader, game one was a seven inning contest and game two was scheduled for nine innings.

The Bears jumped out early on Wharton County, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings. BRCC led 8-1, but couldn't hang on to get the win. The Bears dropped game one 11-8.

BRCC began the scoring by loading the bases with the first three batters to come to the plate. Seth Daugherty led off with a single, followed by Tyler Laporte being hit by a pitch. John Mauldin would then single to load the bases with no outs.

A two-run single by Joseph Domingue would get things started. After another two run single by Aidan Hodges, the Bears led 4-0 after the first inning.

BRCC was back at it in the second inning. Daugherty hit a two run home run to extend the lead to five. Later in the inning, Hunter David and Domingue would hit back to back singles. Those two would score when Hodges hit his second single of the game and drove in two more runs.

Troy Whitty started on the mound for Baton Rouge. He lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs. Wharton County's big inning came in the third inning when the plated six runs, including a grand slam.

The script flipped for game two. BRCC found themselves trailing most of the game, down 7-3 in the bottom half of the sixth inning the Bears pounded Wharton County for eight runs to take a 11-3 lead.

Both teams would add a run in the eighth and BRCC would win the game 12-8.
